Towering clouds unleash torrential downpours, only to clear the way for stunning rainbows that stretch across the sky. Then, in a once-in-a-lifetime experience, the 2024 total solar eclipse transformed day into twilight, revealing breathtaking phases like Bailey’s Beads, the Diamond Ring Effect, and the ethereal glow of totality.
Beyond the storms and celestial events, the sky gifts us with daily masterpieces—sunrises and sunsets that paint the horizon with colors too vivid to replicate. Lightning photography is both an art and a challenge—an electrifying pursuit that requires patience, precision, and a deep understanding of storm behavior. As storms roll in and the air crackles with energy, cloud-to-ground lightning bolts split the sky in unpredictable, fleeting bursts. These moments, occurring before the rain begins, can be both overwhelming and awe-inspiring, especially when witnessed in the open landscape.

Skyscape photography is all about timing, light, and perspective, and few moments capture the dynamic nature of weather better than torrential downpours and the rainbows that follow.
When the atmosphere is primed and the clouds unleash a deluge—what some call a “Texas Flood” or “the bottom falling out of the sky”—it becomes a spectacle best observed from a distance. From afar, these walls of rain create dramatic visual contrasts, with dark, brooding storm clouds colliding against lighter sky tones, forming striking compositions.
As the storm progresses, the sky becomes a canvas of ever-changing colors. When the sun finds a break in the clouds at the right angle, it bathes the turbulent formations in an otherworldly glow—soft pastels, fiery oranges, and deep purples that shift by the second.
Then, as the storm moves out, the magic of refraction takes center stage. A clearing sky allows for the emergence of vibrant rainbows, sometimes even a double rainbow stretching across the horizon.

The 2024 Solar Eclipse
Some moments in photography are truly once-in-a-lifetime, and capturing the total solar eclipse of 2024 from my backyard in Dallas, TX, was one of them. Having never photographed an eclipse before, it was an intense learning experience—one where preparation met the unpredictable nature of the sky.
As the moon began its journey across the sun, the sky itself became part of the composition. Breaking through a canvas of blue and orange clouds, the eclipse moved through its mesmerizing phases. Bailey’s Beads shimmered like scattered jewels along the sun’s edge, giving way to the breathtaking Diamond Ring Effect—an instant where light and shadow danced in cosmic perfection. Then came totality, an eerie and awe-inspiring moment when the sky darkened, the corona radiated with ghostly tendrils of light, and time seemed to stand still.
The best part of capturing the total solar eclipse of 2024 was in the humbling experience of witnessing something so rare and grand unfold right before your eyes.
Sometimes you just have to put the camera down, take a step back and simply take it all in.

Whether standing at the edge of a favorite lake, watching the horizon at the beach, capturing the scene from a random roadside, or simply stepping onto the back porch on a winter evening to frame the sun’s glow over a snow-covered field—each sunrise and sunset offers a unique, fleeting display of color and light.
As a photographer, these moments are about more than just pointing the camera at the horizon. The interplay of clouds, atmosphere, and water reflections creates an infinite variety of compositions, each one impossible to replicate. The golden hour and blue hour provide the best opportunities to capture soft, diffused light, while a well-placed cloud can transform an ordinary sky into a dramatic masterpiece.
